Voxondo privacy policy
This policy covers the Voxondo app for iPhone and Android and this website. Developer: Kirill Nikulin. Contact: [email protected].
Summary
- Voxondo has no accounts, no server and no analytics or advertising of its own. The app does not send the developer your audio, text or translations.
- Microphone audio and conversation history are not saved on the device.
- In offline mode, speech recognition and translation run on the device. On Android, Google ML Kit, which translates on the device, may send Google diagnostic and usage data, but not your text or translations.
- Online translation with Qwen is optional. When you use it, audio goes from your device directly to QwenCloud.
Microphone
Voxondo uses the microphone only to translate speech while you are recording. The system asks for microphone permission the first time you start recording. You can turn off microphone access at any time in the system settings.
What stays on your device
Recognized text and translations are kept in memory while the app is open. They are gone when you clear the history or close the app. You can copy a translation to the clipboard yourself.
The app saves its settings on the device (the language pair, the mode and other options) and, if you use Qwen, your API key. Speech and translation models that you download are also stored on the device. On iPhone, the speech models the app downloads are excluded from iCloud backup. iOS manages Apple Translation language packs separately.
On iPhone you can import an audio file (WAV, M4A or CAF) for translation. The app processes it on the device and does not change the file.
Offline mode
On iPhone, speech is recognized by the Parakeet Ultra model through the FluidAudio library, and text is translated by Apple Translation. Both run on the iPhone. According to Apple's documentation, Apple's system metrics may include the languages and the app identifier, but not the translated content.
On Android, speech is recognized by the system's on-device speech recognition service. Voxondo uses only the on-device recognizer, which does not fall back to the cloud. Text is translated on the device by Google ML Kit. Google does not receive text or translations through ML Kit.
According to Google's disclosure, ML Kit may send Google technical data for diagnostics and usage analytics when a network is available. This includes device information (manufacturer, model, system version and build), the package name and app version, per-installation identifiers, performance metrics, API configuration, feature version, event type, error codes, the size of feature input and output, and the configured source and target languages. ML Kit sends this data over HTTPS and does not transfer it to third parties. ML Kit uses Firebase Remote Config and Firebase Installations for remote configuration and may download its own updates when a network is available.
Translations are read aloud with the system text-to-speech voices on the device. The synthesized audio is not saved to files.
Downloads
In offline mode the app downloads models and language packs only when you ask it to, for example with Download languages. The exception is ML Kit on Android, which may fetch its own updates.
- iPhone: the speech recognition model and the voice activity detection model come from Hugging Face. If you turn on Identify speakers, the speaker identification model also comes from Hugging Face. Apple Translation language packs are downloaded by iOS from Apple.
- Android: translation packages are downloaded by ML Kit from Google. Speech recognition languages and voices are installed through Android system services.
As with any download, these services receive your IP address and the technical details of the request. The app does not send them your speech or text.
Online translation with Qwen
This mode stays off until you save your own QwenCloud API key and agree to send audio to QwenCloud. Check connection opens a session with QwenCloud using your key, without audio.
While you record in this mode, the app sends QwenCloud your microphone audio and the target language. Your API key authorizes the request. QwenCloud returns the recognized text, the translation and, if you turn on Qwen voice output, synthesized speech. The connection is encrypted and goes only to the fixed address dashscope-intl.aliyuncs.com, the QwenCloud International (Singapore) service. The app does not resend audio after a lost connection.
Voxondo shares audio only with QwenCloud, only after your consent and under your own QwenCloud account. How QwenCloud protects and processes this data is set by its own terms and data policy. QwenCloud bills usage to the owner of the key. The developer of Voxondo does not receive this data.
Typed text is translated on the device in every mode, including Qwen: by Apple Translation on iPhone and by ML Kit on Android.
Your API key is stored only on your device. On iPhone it is kept in the Keychain, available only while the device is unlocked and not transferred to other devices. On Android it is encrypted with AES-GCM using a key from Android Keystore, in a file excluded from backup. The key is not placed in regular settings, URLs, history or logs.
Delete key in the app removes the local copy of the key and resets your consent to cloud processing. To revoke the key itself, delete it in your QwenCloud account.
Email and crash reports
If you email the developer, your address and message are used only to answer you. You can ask for them to be deleted at any time.
If you allow your device to share diagnostics with app developers, Apple or Google may give the developer crash reports and aggregated usage statistics. These reports come from the platform, not from Voxondo, and arrive only with your permission in the system settings.
This website
This website has no cookies, scripts or analytics. Like any web server, the hosting may keep standard access logs, such as IP addresses.
Retention and deletion
Apart from support email, the platform reports and the website access logs described above, the developer stores no data about you. On your device:
- Text history is kept in memory until you clear it or close the app.
- Settings and the models the app downloads are kept until you delete the app.
- Language packs, speech recognition languages and voices installed through iOS or Android stay until you remove them in the system settings.
- The Qwen API key is kept until you tap Delete key. On iPhone, Keychain entries can remain after the app is removed, so delete the key in the app first.
Data processed by QwenCloud, Apple or Google is covered by their own policies. Send requests about that data to them.
Changes to this policy
If the app starts handling data differently, this page will be updated together with the date at the top.
